My interview with GJ Griffiths author of SO WHAT! STORIES or WHATEVER! by Misty Daniels
Misty: So what does G.J. stand for?
Ans: Graham – J will remain a mystery?
Misty: When did you write your first book and how old were you?
Ans: 2011/12 and in my sixth decade!
Misty: As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
Ans: I wanted to be David Attenborough or, failing that, be a zoologist who travelled across the world studying animals.
Misty: Any writing rituals? Tell us about your daily process or your crazy writing habits.
Ans: Catch up on emails – usually a big mistake as it takes me away from writing books! Then either continuing with my current book or checking over the work in progress, re-drafting, research etc. I like to have classical music on in the background and sit at the same window where I can see a large ash tree and the various birds that visit it.
Misty: Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
Ans: Erotica and needless violence especially involving children.
Misty: What book are you reading now?
Ans: I usually have at least two as I write book reviews as well, when I can find the time! I’m currently reading The Station by H A Larson but finished The Heart Lands by Richard Becker two days ago.
Misty: Did you learn anything from writing So What! Stories or Whatever! and what was it?
Ans: I learned that readers do not usually like authors to leave swear words “blank” with just the first letter etc. Most would rather see the original expletive or a less offensive substitution word. In addition I found it difficult to slot this book into a genre. It wound up in humorous/YA/teens/contemporary fiction. But most readers seemed to identify with the characters somewhere in it so maybe there should be a Nostalgia genre?
Misty: If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play Robert and Kyle?
Ans: Robert = the younger Steve Martin; Kyle = the younger Robert deNiro
Misty: What is your favorite quote?
Ans: Think globally but act locally (relates to the environment)
Misty: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Ans: I assume you mean apart from the obvious, “Please buy more of my books.”
I apologise to those of you who find most of my characters have some sort of back story and/or mission in life about saving the environment/planet/wildlife, but I feel strongly that it is vital we try to leave a better world behind in which our children can live.
I hope that’s what you wanted, Adina. ☺
